A New Natural Capital Protocol Is Generating Billions In Savings.

Today 8,000 companies in 140 countries have joined the United Nations Global Compact (committing to adopt a principles-based management and operations approach), a huge increase in numbers from the 40 organizations present at the year 2000 launch. We are at a point where many companies recognize the benefits and opportunities of embracing corporate responsibility, including increased trust and market value, growth from ‘green’ innovations and ‘base of the pyramid’ business ventures, and interest from an investment community that—more and more by the day—considers sustainability factors such as sound environmental stewardship, social responsibility and good governance in calculating a companies long term value… all of which is leading to an emergence of new protocols and business systems geared toward helping companies reach their sustainability goals.

“The Natural Capital Coalition has released an extensive report on business expectations around the Natural Capital Protocol, its standardized framework for measuring impact and dependence on natural ecosystems. At this stage the Natural Capital Coalition is supported by 150 companies in its Business Engagement Program, many of which are being proactive in their valuation of natural capital. Among them, Kering recently made its Environmental Profit and Loss methodology public to encourage wider adoption of natural capital accounting; and Dow Chemical recently asserted that it expects to generate $1billion in cost savings and new cash flow by 2025 by valuing natural capital.” —Sustainable Brands
