A Record Breaking 40% of Women Are Now The Sole or Primary Breadwinners of Their Homes.

While this phenomena continues to grow, it’s worth noting that this stat actually is made up of two very different HH’s: women who are married and out-earn their husbands (37%), vs those who are single parents (67%). Interestingly, while single mothers struggle to live above the poverty rate, married families with a breadwinner mom-out earn all other families, even those where the father earns more. Unfortunately though, many of these married breadwinner mothers aren’t happy about the arrangement.

According to a February CNN Report, the 71% of married breadwinner mothers who fell into that role by necessity (vs the rest who actively chose to have it) are reluctant and feel less satisfied about their lives overall. Likely, much of that is a reflection (or absorption) of lingering societal beliefs in which an estimated 51% still believe that mothers who work are compromising their families in some meaningful way, and 50% worry marriages suffer when moms bring home more money. This is a catch twenty two that deserves a big shift.
