MIT recently issued a calling to all people for whom “solving the world’s problems is an enduring passion; people who wish to be accountable for creating change.” Conceived to address universal problems that limit human potential, Solve is a new platform from MIT —bringing together the most extraordinary minds (and remember, that applies to anyone whether you’re a student or Nobel Prize winner), to build extraordinary solutions—specifically around four major pillars: Learn. Cure. Fuel. Make. Here’s how they break it down…
Learn. Today, 72 million children are not in school, deprived of the education that is vital to our collective social and economic development across the globe. Is it possible to provide the high-quality education that elite universities now offer to a billion more people, free?
Cure. Is it possible to cut the mortality and morbidity of diseases such as cancer by 50% in 10 years? Leveraging near-term productivity improvement and longer-term radical innovation can transform health outcomes and bring greater productivity to the healthcare system.
Fuel. Can we have enough clean water and nutritious food for the estimated 9.6 billion people on earth in 2050?
Make. How can we build a global, modern infrastructure, one built in step with a global digital economy and our changing energy and climate realities, is the foundation for economic growth and advancement all around the world. It is necessary for the delivery of the basic services that could lift millions out of poverty, and it is essential as we usher in the next great wave of innovation and value creation.
“We will do more than talk about the greatest problems facing our world. We will set the course to solve them.” —Rafael Reif, President, MIT
