Could ‘Cyc’ Be The First Truly Intelligent Brain Built From Scratch?

No Comment 96 Views

We’ve had Siri, much ado has been made about Watson, and Viv claims to write its own code and answer more intuitively than both of them. What you most likely haven’t heard of yet is an AI project by Cycorp that since 1984 has been building a brain from scratch using software, code and data to produce a truly intelligent system, (able to determine common-sense), over a 30-yr time frame using gazillions of pieces of information about how people speak, think, work and solve problems.

“Any time you look at any kind of real life piece of text or utterance that one human wrote or said to another human, it’s filled with analogies, modal logic, belief, expectation, fear, nested modals, lots of variables and quantifiers. Cycorp’s product, Cyc, isn’t “programmed” in the conventional sense. It’s much more accurate to say it’s being “taught.” —Doug Lenat, CEO of Cycorp

There is a lot of speculation, fear, awe and excitement around what AI will offer and represent for humans in the future, and we’ve all heard the cautionary warnings from future luminaries such as Elon Musk & Bill Gates. It remains to be seen how this all plays out but there’s no question AI is here, and it’s here to stay.
