Societal Transformation: Radical Stats That Prove How Times Have Changed.

No Comment 34 Views

Forces of change in the 20th Century produced more radical societal transformations than any other century in recorded history. Let’s take a look at some fun stats that illustrate the point:

In Pew Research polling in 2001, Americans opposed same-sex marriage by a 57% to 35% margin. Since then, support for same-sex marriage has steadily grown. Today, a majority of Americans (52%) support same-sex marriage, compared with 40% who oppose it, and 36 states have declared it legal. Nearly seven-in-ten (68%) Millennials favor allowing gays and lesbians to marry.

How about religion? A record one-in-five American adults today – and three-in-ten Millennials – do not have any religious affiliation. Approximately three-in-ten describe themselves as atheists or agnostics; the remainder say they have no particular religion.

And drugs? Support for legalization of marijuana has risen sharply over the past decade with 53% now favoring the legal use of marijuana (68% are Millennials), while 44% are opposed. As recently as 2006, just 32% supported marijuana legalization, while nearly twice as many (60%) were opposed. Way back in 1969, when Gallup first asked the question they found that just 12% favored legalizing marijuana use.

As of January 2014, 74% of online adults were using social networking sites. YouTube now has more than 1 billion users with 300 hours of video uploaded every minute. And Facebook, which remember didn’t even exist prior to 2004, now has more than 890 million people logging in per day

Technological innovation, new economic organization, political and cultural restructuring, as well as vast global sharing and distribution of information, have all contributed to shifting social patterns that are powerfully impacting everything from businesses to governments, forever altering the way we think and interact.
