SxSW is in full swing and with so many innovators, creative brains and groundbreaking ideas converging, it seems appropriate this week to shine a spotlight on some of the world changing ideas that have the potential to positively shape the future for all of us. According to a recent Pew survey, the American public anticipates that the coming half-century will be a period of profound scientific change, as inventions that were once confined to the realm of science fiction come into common usage. Having spent time a couple of days ago with some of the brilliant thinkers who are literally architecting and/or influencing what the future will look like, we think they’re right.

While it’s debatable whether time travel or teleportation will be here any time soon, experiments in programming matter have progressed significantly down the track. “We believe its now possible to program nearly every material to change shape and properties,” says Skylar Tibbits, director of MIT’s Self Assembly Laboratory. And what about space? 33% of americans believe that humans will build long-term space colonies on other planets. We’re going to explore some of the transformative technologies emerging from programs designed to make that possible. We’ll also take a look at the future of health and dive into some other new frontiers as we advance forward into a brave new world.
