Keeping it simple can be more complicated than you think. On one hand you have global networks such as Accelerate, a call-centre company that employs 20,000 people but they all work from home; CrisisCommons, which musters volunteers to help out in natural disaster situations, mobilizing thousands of people with little top-down direction; Even Coke and McDonald’s have survived long-term by applying single-minded branding and simple business models, respectively. But while the former are realizing rapid success, today’s global business giants are being challenged to look at complexity in an entirely different way.

As it gets more and more difficult to navigate the now dizzying array of complex performance and operational hierarchies created by businesses to manage large scale complexities, some argue that the only way to pursue innovation and improve productivity is to focus on a few simple things that can give bring renewed direction. Yves Morieux (senior partner and managing director in the Washington, DC, office of The Boston Consulting Group), talks about this in his book, ‘Six Simple Rules: Ways To Manage Complexity Without Getting Complicated‘. This article from Forbes by Julian Birkinshaw, London Business School Term Chair Professor of Strategy and Entrepreneurship, goes even further, suggesting that managing complexity is a battle between emergence and entropy, and takes us on an insightful, simple, deep dive that explains the many reasons why.
